Anatomy of a Monday

So this is what i do on a regular Monday.

I start at 11am with a chai latte and something sweet. First thing is always make a “To Do” list, or else the whole day will be swallowed up by aimless surfing. Then, I check the blogs in my bookmarks and follow a few random links to see what else is out there, until i break for lunch at 1pm. Lunch is unfailingly at a tiny little French restaurant near the office, Concombre, Y1000 for the lunch set, read something or skymail friends, a quick chat to the Master, dash back to the office.

After lunch I get into some heavier stuff. I read The News. I hate reading the news. A balanced news day involves flipping between Google news (today im looking for articles supporting a rumour i heard very recently - seems that Walmart aka Seiyu is experiencing difficulties in Japan due to their strict adherence to buying and cultural practices that have been ‘effective’ in the States but haven’t been working well here - in the hope of blogging it, but i cant find anything to support it so there goes that!), news.com.au breaking news and ZNet (wanna treat? Read Arundhati Roy’s “Peace?”). After a while, im all news-ed out and/or frustrated and depressed, I move on to researching something I’m interested in at the moment, or sending emails to people, or writing blog entries. I drink heaps of water, partly because its free and yet good-tasting, partly because the airconditioning is sucking the moisture out of me, partly because im always worried that i dont drink enough water and this is one day when i can be sure to get the recommended 8 glasses in, and partly because i need the walk to the cooler or i will go stir crazy. In between all of this people ask me now and then to check someone’s English level.

This continues until 6, when they let me out for dinner. Dinner is usually kinda snacky, a salad snatched on the way between a couple of shops i need to get stuff from, or i want to check out, or paying bills, going to the bank, something involving running around cos by this stage my back hurts from sitting down and i feel weird from being chained to a chair for 6 of the last 7 hours.

From 7 - 9pm i waste time until i can go home. By this stage my stomach is bloated and irritated from too many glasses of water, my back is low level grumbly, i have a headache from looking at a computer screen for too long. My hair is too tight and my brain is fried. By 8pm im doing completely useless stuff like playing zookeeper (and im not giving you the link, its too dangerous) because i can no longer concentrate on anything else. I find thoughts about my sense of under-employment and waste sneaking in as the minutes tick by. I wonder why im here. At five to 9 i close the multitude of explorer windows ive opened, shut down the computer, change my shoes and finish my last water, and then im out of here.

I feel bad that im being paid to do nothing. I could be doing so much more. But at the same time, leaving such cushy, undemanding work is also difficult. Its like being drowned in marshmallows. The worst thing is, when i get home tonight, the first thing im gonna do is check email, and post some pics… damn computers!

Well, so far, ive been given half an hour of work to do, and another 15 mins is coming up soon!
