Environmental Officer: Gawler areaCategories: Stray Threads
I spoke to the Mayor of Gawler recently, asked him for a job actually, but the only thing he could offer me was the role of environmental officer which will soon be available. Unfortunately the Gawler council doesn’t have an in-house mediator, tho he, like most others, assured me that there was no shortage of conflict around.
Our conversation about the role of an environmental officer was interesting tho. Apparently there used to be a few deep holes in the creek that runs through town, and kids used to go swimming there, a few decades ago. But over time, water washing down from the open-cut quarry up in the hills behind town has carried rubble that filled up the waterholes, and so now there is no swimming. He has already asked about getting the rubble out of those holes, but ‘the environmentalists’ and the owners said no.
I am aware that some perspectives on environmentalism would argue that we should not try to reverse changes that have already happened. Getting the rubble out of these holes is a bit of a losing battle anyway since the quarry is still there. But I also realised that for many older people, environmentalism is a tool for turning back the clock, regaining natural features that they enjoyed as children and would like to share with their grandchildren. This is one possible point of engagement for environmental activists and older generations, although it is a difficult one in terms of restoration attitudes versus preventative or social change attitudes.
But anyway, just in case you are interested, send them a resume!
