Out of the closet

Ok, ill admit it, every now and then ive been watching that um, that 1984 show, whats it called again...? I find it both fascinating and tedious. The program itself i find tedious, all that hype and build up and buzz, based on so little content; tedious. Watching it is annoying. So why watch? Well, im fascinated to see ethics in action, how people regulate themselves (those little internal struggles about what to say), how they are regulated by bb (only alcoholic 3 drinks each, taboos on talking about various subjects), and how big brother is regulated by the viewing audience and social morals (that one-time-only screening of bb: Adults Only, censoring of language in the evening show but not the late night show).

And now bb, under considerable public scrutiny after two of the housemates were evicted for sexually harassing another housemate, has closed down the public forums on its website (so i hear; i went to the website once, and only once, and found out you have to log in to see the freecam. Submit my details to big brother - are you kidding me?????) because people would not stop talking about the evictions and harassment. But there is rampant discussion on other blogs and forums, and the live feed is all over the internet.

The scary part is in the comments. The idea that a woman can talk about sex and have a sexual past means that she is therefore up for anything and should just take whats dished out to her is pretty common still. It seems that the housemates broke the rules and were evicted by big brother, but in a lot of Anonymous’s eyes, the redhead is to blame for having engaged in.... in what exactly, joking about sex? making sexual references? talking about or alluding to past sexual experiences? being ordered to kiss everyone at an earlier stage in the game? Cant be sure, i havent watched enough (thank goodness). But what constitutes sexual harassment is still pretty much up for debate it seems. And women, well, in a lot of people’s eyes, they should just take it as a joke and get over it. Its just a turkey slap for gods sake, you know, where one guy holds a girl down as the other guy slaps her across the face with his penis. Its just horseplay between friends. And she did take it as a joke. The fact that the redhead DID take it as a joke didnt stop her being blamed for the guys being forced to leave, or having her character assasinated down in the comments.

Anyway, its blown out all over the interent, and the show is on in 5 mins, so im wondering whether the producers have decided to address the issue at all, or just pretend nothing happened like they did on Sunday… How will bb respond to the real BBs: its audience, the network, the PM, and the law?

Well, 5 mins or so of housemates discussion about it, and them we move on. The message seems to be: “life goes on, get over it”. I think there needs to be a lot more discussion about what sexual harassment is, why thinking you are entitled to sexual attention from the opposite sex is a problem, where people get messages about entitlement from (does anyone else find that Click ad problematic?), and how we are going to make it better.
