Roast lamb and bike ride comboCategories: Life in progress Home Economics
I’ve been looking forward to today, I thought I might have a bit of a mundane adventure! I bought a leg of lamb yesterday and decided to do a Sunday roast. Months ago i saw a cooking show on tv that featured a great Roast Lamb recipe. I searched the internet for it, but nothing came up, so I decided to try it from memory.
I rubbed the leg with salt and pepper, and then with rosemary and garlic. I stabbed little holes into the leg and pushed rosemary and garlic in. I sliced two onions into 1cm thick rings, and then did a couple of potatoes the same way. I lay the potato and onion slices on the bottom of the tray, then put the leg on top. I poured a cup of hot veg stock into the tray along with a bay leaf and a few sprigs of rosemary, and added an extra cup of hot water, since my tray is pretty big. I put the lot into the oven at 160C (or thereabouts) and then headed out for a bike ride!
I was planning to ride to Henley Square today, but didnt quite make it. The track along the Torrens is not as clear as the route I took to Glenelg, but it is a much nicer ride. It is also a much longer ride! The Torrens winds its way in a very indirect fashion, and with the time pressure of the roast in the oven in mind, i found the indirectness of it a bit frustrating. The headwind didnt help much either. But there are so many great spots along the way. Next time I go, I will make it a leisurely after-lunch trip. I got to the point where i could see the ocean and then stopped. I thought about how much time i could spend on this ride. I thought about Henley Square, which i hadnt seen in years. I thought about the latte i planned to have as i looked out over the beach. I thought about how tired my legs already were at this halfway point. I turned around, abandoning the Square and the latte to another day, but anticipating a tailwind, a cuppa tea at home and a not-overcooked roast. I struggled home even with the help from the breeze tho - riding to the Bay, sitting around for a few hours and then riding home again (which i plan to do again tomorrow: another Japanese lesson and hangout with Yuji) is quite a different kettle of fish to riding there and back all in one go. My knees were absolutely killing me by the time i got back.
I made a cuppa tea and pulled the roast out of the oven. It had been in there close to 2 hours. I sat it on a dish, covered it with foil and put it to the side. I turned over the veggies in the bottom of the tray and put it back into the oven at 200C for another 20 mins. I put some bread in for 10 mins to get crusty too, and then realising i had no other veggies prepared sauteed a bit of broccoli and tomato with a single thinly sliced kalamata olive. It was all delicious!
All I need now is a proper carving knife and fork so i can cut nice slices instead of straggly bits!
I think I will make this one again. It wasnt as tender as i had hoped, but the flavours were great. I will be eating roast lamb sandwiches with locally produced horseradish and an unusual peach, black olive and merlot relish for the rest of the week! Yum!!!

That looks delicious. Must have been “big meats” day yesterday; we grilled a chicken last night with a tarragon, thyme, lemon & honey glaze.

I just read that Bloggin mistakes thing. Who the flip wrote that? Is he/she assuming that all us Bloggers are people lusting after trust and recognition? Oh come stroke my ego. The only one which made sense was the one about the employer - that is worth considering, but even so, as an employer if I read someone’s Blog and they had an ounce of character I would not reject them simply because they had written about their lunch. Everyone has a past and a character right? Any prospective employer with a bit of character themselves would recognise that. I think this top ten was written by an MBA automaton for MBA automatons. In my world, you write what you like, be a bit careful and delete what you are uncomfortable with. TWADDLE!
