There is a difference between drought and desertification

If theres no good rain in the next six weeks pretty much all of South Australia’s current food crop, including stock, will dry up.

SA Water has been selling on unused allocations rather than buying them back, and the river, despite the current drought down here, is sold out… We may run out of food, but at least there’s plenty of grapes and wine!

Mr. Howard, I’d like to suggest that along with praying for rain, perhaps we could start taking the steps that are required towards ending the nation’s investment in cotton and rice farms and moving into hemp and other markets more suited to the local climate. Big steps, preferably.

Back at the beginning of the year, Public Opinion wrote about the inevitability of this crisis, and the cartoon is priceless.
