Won’t you take me to funkytown?Categories: I heart Tokyo Anthropology
MJ and Yoshi at a previous Four Valley Gig. I didnt have the camera with me last night, so this photo was stolen from Tod - I would have asked him if I could borrow it but hes in Fiji right now the lucky sod, so im just stealing it.
MJ and Yoshi had another live at Four Valley last night, it was great fun as always! Marshmallow Spike is my favourite band, and i am their, well, i cant claim to be their biggest groupie since they keep scheduling gigs for when im at work, but hey, i was the first person to buy their cd, so that makes me something high in the groupie stakes, doesnt it? I think ive seen more Marshmallow Spike than Toshi the Rock God’s now sadly defunct Cloud No 9 by now!!!
The band that was on before the Spikes was pretty good too, a hiphop/r&b kinda thing with a very cute very very young frontman who could actually sing. I fell in love. It happens that quickly these days… In between bands, we amused ourselves by looking for the best band names advertised in the Live House, and here are the winners!
Tangy Burp (the outright winner of the evening)
Fly Than A Bird (*shakes head and gives up teaching*)
Nive-Crow (alone not so interesting but their slogans were ‘Dug up Rock/Dug up Bright Fellows’, which i quite liked)
Pinstripe Star Fruit
Stickynuts
Boiled Coot
Yes Folks, all of these bands are playing Four Valley in the next month or so, so get on down there and see if the music lives up to the name!
In other news, Tokyo Designer’s Block is on again this long weekend! Its a pretty good festival, it has a very disorganised, spontaneous feel to it. Last year i remember being in a shop that had devoted some of its floorspace to one of the featured designers. A friend and i were just browsing thru, playing with the wooden blocks, glue and paint that had been provided and suddenly they started serving free food and wine, which we were invited to enjoy!!! The whole of Aoyama becomes about ten times more creative and openminded and windowshoppy-er than it already is! Its a lot of fun. Looks like Ash and I will be going on the last day so i hope i can get some cool pics then.
Here’s a pic from last years Nike display at Spiral building, Akira myself and Jean-Francios are standing in front of decorative sneaker covers arranged to look like a traditional new-opening-congratulations display.
